Dulcinea Herrera
Henry W. Bloch School of Management Alumna
Bachelor of Business Administration, Emphasis in Marketing, 2022
Dulcinea Herrera’s (BBA 2022) career has been a vibrant journey marked by creativity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her Latin and Indigenous roots. From her beginnings as an artist and model to her pivotal role in Kansas City’s cultural landscape, Dulcinea has always been driven by a passion for community-building and entrepreneurship.
“My career path has been a dynamic journey of creativity and community-building,” she reflects. “Starting as an artist, model, and Miss Kansas City Latina 2021, I transitioned into entrepreneurship, co-founding Café Corazón, Kansas City’s first Latin and Indigenous coffee shop/roastery.”
Café Corazón, which Dulcinea co-founded, is not just a coffee shop—it’s a cultural hub. “The idea was deeply personal,” she says. “It was a way to connect people through ethically sourced coffee and culture. I wanted to create a space where our Latin and Indigenous roots could thrive and where people could come together to celebrate and experience our heritage.”
Dulcinea’s vision for Café Corazón has always been clear: “It’s more than just a coffee shop. It’s a place where people feel seen, valued, and connected. I envisioned a space that celebrates Latin and Indigenous traditions while uplifting local artists and entrepreneurs. The goal has always been to honor the past, embrace the present, and inspire a future where diversity is celebrated.”
Her entrepreneurial journey has not been without challenges. Opening and running a business during uncertain times, especially during the pandemic, tested her resilience. “It forced us to adapt quickly,” Dulcinea explains. She remains firm in her belief that community support and adaptability are key to overcoming obstacles. “We offered culturally meaningful take-home products and expanded outdoor spaces. The experience reinforced the importance of staying adaptable and listening to our community,” she says.
Her time at the Henry W. Bloch School of Management has played a crucial role in shaping her career. “Bloch equipped me with essential business acumen, strategic thinking, and a strong understanding of community impact,” she shares. “The emphasis on leadership and innovation helped me navigate challenges and recognize opportunities. Networking skills and the importance of collaboration were key takeaways that I’ve carried into every aspect of my work.”
For current students she offers this advice, “Start with your ‘why.’ Understand the deeper purpose behind what you want to create and let that guide your decisions. Build a strong network, stay curious, and be open to learning from every experience. Don’t be afraid to take risks or fail—those moments often lead to the most growth. And above all, stay connected to your community, because that connection will keep you grounded and inspired.”
